Choosing the right dog food

There are many different options when it comes to feeding your best friend. It largely comes down to what’s right for you and of course, what’s right for your dog! But, before you start choosing the right dog food, here are some things you should know.

Dogs are omnivores, which means they eat meat and plants. But, they are strongly biased towards eating meat. That’s why all our dog food products start with meat at the core. Because dogs also need the right mix of calories as well as macro and micro nutrients, we add extra ingredients to create the right nutritional blend of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals with minimal to no processing.

At Paringa, all our dog food is created with two key aims in mind:

Happy dog – The food tastes great, is easily digested and helps your dog maintain great health.

Happy owner – If your dog’s happy then so are you, right? But we also make sure that our products are convenient and easy for you to use too.

Understanding labels

Some pet foods are labelled as Complete Food or Complete and Balanced which means that the dog food will deliver the full nutritional requirements to the dog. This can be the only food they have.

Other pet foods are labelled Complementary Food which satisfy some but not all nutritional requirements. Good examples are treats.

It’s fine to feed your dog a combination of different foods as long as they’re getting the majority of their intake from complete and balanced sources.

Most dogs aren’t too fussy, being happy with the same food every day, but of course there are exceptions. If you need help choosing the right dog food for your four-legged friend, please Contact Us.

Preservative Free

Generally relates to meat items that need to be stored in the fridge but there are different interpretations. Fresh products can include both raw or cooked options and most Paringa products fall within this category, needing to be stored at or below 4 degrees Celsius.

means that the product is uncooked, usually it’s meat or meat-based products and may have other ingredients. Many people like to feed their dog a raw food diet as they believe it’s closer to what their ancestors ate. Jump over to our Raw diet page to learn more.

Some dog owners prefer cooked meat for their dog. Their dog may have a sensitive stomach or just like it better. The good news is there are now a number of cooked meat options that aren’t highly processed, such as Paringa’s Meatball Toppers that are lightly steamed to lock in the goodness.

If you’re looking for a dog food that’s completely free of all preservatives, then head to our shop to see our Frozen Preservative Free options.
